Musical Preferences and the Functions of Music in the Lives of High School Adolescents

Sažetak
Music plays an important role in adolescents’ lives because it contributes to their cognitive development, self-concept, peer socialization, and social perception, and helps them regulate their moods. This study aimed to examine the functions of music in adolescents’ lives and their musical preferences. The findings indicate that music is very important to adolescents attending high school. Music is an important leisure activity for them, and the values that derive from the functions of music and musical preferences are focused on togetherness and socialization. Because the social functions of music proved most important in adolescents’ lives, group work may provide a way in which these values can be incorporated into teaching.
