Sažetak

This study presents speculations about the Korčula moreška based on comparative
observations of mock combat sword performances in Mexico. Three markers are identified:
the Roman military style theatrical costume, two unequal length swords, and staging
characteristics of oppositional groups. Although these "markers" are noted in unrelated
ethnographic geographical contexts, they direct us to look into historical periods of the
markers: the costume, swords and staging of the Korčula moreška. The moreška as it is
performed currently is unique to Korčula, but the comparison with selected features
(markers) have historical relationship to mock combat sword performances introduced into
Mexico during the 16th century.
