Stress and coping – Theoretical models and their implications for the unemployment problem

Lidija Arambašić

Sažetak

Despite the abundance of professional and scientific articles dealing with stress and coping in the last 60 years, various authors still consider that all the concepts have not been clearly and uniformely defined. Different theories of stress and coping contain different definitions of stress, ways of coping with stress and the outcomes/effects of a stressful event. Theoretical discussions and investigations most frequently use the so-called transactional model of stress and coping. The best known among these is the model proposed by R.S. Lazarus and his colleagues in the 1960's. According to this model, the outcome/effect of a stressful transaction is the result of interacting personal and environmental factors, continuously influencing each other. The article presents the results of recent investigations showing the applicability of transactional models of stress in unemployment.
