Within the context of the international scholarly conference on Marko Marulić, in 2008 the first Croatian studies textological workshop was held devoted to the problems of reading Croatian modern MSS written in Latin script. Foreign students of the Faculty of Philosophy in Split and students of the Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar attended the workshop for two days. At the beginning of the work, leader of the workshop Amir Kapetanović initiated the attendees briefly into the main problems of text in the transcription of Latin script texts up to the Revival period. In two groups under the leadership of Dragica Malić and Amir Kapetanović the members transcribed a previously unpublished poem Od dvora nebeskoga stumačenje from the Trogirsko-splitska pjesmarica (second half of the 16th and first part of the 17th century). This poem is composed of 228 verses (octo- and heptosyllabics). The subject is the joy that reigns in heaven (»u nebeskom gori raju / svi an’jeli lip’ igraju / sa svetimi ter spivaju / pisni slatke u pokoju« [In skyey heaven above / all the angels sweetly play / and with the saints they sing / sweet songs in peace]). This Chakavian poem has in its title the word stumačenje [interpretation, explanation], which might be understood to be »translation«. So far, however, no foreign language model of the poem has been identified. In its versification it recalls the Philomena of St Bonaventure, as translated by Marko Marulić (Slavić). A variant of this Marulić verse translation is recorded in the Trogir and Split Book of Poems.
In making the transcription, the students commented on the orthographic and linguistic features of the text and the lexis was translated. Here we publish a transcription of the poem, comments on the graphy, the grammar and usage and the language of the text, and a full frequency dictionary is given. We hope that this article will encourage further research into this poem.
