Sažetak
Lack of potable water is a major global problem. Currently, one fifth of European continent is facing the problem. Sustainable access to safe drinking water is one of UN Millennium Development Goals. Desalinization is an expensive and energy consuming process. On the other hand, large reserves of fresh water can be found at or bellow the ocean bottom. The plans for exploitation of offshore springs are being prepared worldwide, especially in endangered regions. This paper gives the review of research related to the emergence and location of offshore springs. The prediction of location with the aid of modern mathematical and numerical models is analysed. The research is of interdisciplinary character connecting geology, oceanography, hydrography, remote sensing and geostatistics in enabling the sustainable development of Earth.
