The Idea of Peace in the Social Documents of Church

Sažetak
Since the word peace - though conveylng one of the central
values of the Catholic social doctrine - Is not monosemic by itself, the
author investigates the content of it in the social documents of
Church, or, in other words, he seeks the answer to the question:
what does the Church actually mean by the word "peace"? Trying to
find a precise answer to the question, the author has divided his
work into three parts. In the first part he determines the coordinates
within which the Church evaluates social reality and these are: 1.
God's revelation; 2. human reason and 3. actual level of historical
and civilizatlon development. Then, in the second part, he analyses
the dialectical nature of peace on the basis of concrete expressions in
the social documents of Church. Namely, in these documents peace
presents itself as: 1. static and dynamic, 2. right and wrong, 3.
possible and impossible and 4. realised and given as a gift. On the
basis of these insights, in the third part, the author tries to
synthesise the obtained ideas, i. e. to gather up different logions on
peace from ali church documents round their mental sources and
recognizes that they ali can be subsumed under two principles: the
principle of order or protological principle, and the principle of love
or eschatological principle. These and such mental sources, then,
determine the specific content of the word "peace" in a particular
logion, but not in the whole document at the same time, least of ali
in ali social church documents. But, as the eschatological principle
is maximalistic ("Be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect."-
Mt.5,48), so is the speech on peace with an eschatological
background in the social church documents more of parenetic
character, while the one that does not bear ali the characteristics of
"true peace" - being the result of fear and compulsion not of love - is
the peace that the Church most strenuously works on, because in
actual circumstances only that and such peace is achievable.
Common option for peace, namely, is the option under the
compulsion of fear of the danger of common death in the imminent
atomic war.
