Sažetak
Gonorrhea is the most common bacterial STD in the world and it has been endemic for many centuries. Despite a long time use of various antimicrobials specific for this disease, gonorrhea remains one of the leading public health problems. The high prevalence in developing countries is largely related to poor accessibility to diagnostic tests and appropriate treatments; on the other hand, the development of resistant gonococcal strains to classic penicillins, tetracyclines,
quinolones and even azithromycin is obvious and represents the therapeutic challenge for dermatovenereologists, gynecologists and infectologists. It should be pointed out that the gonococcal infection primarily affects the genital and urethral mucosa, but it can also affect other mucosal surfaces (oropharyngeal, anal) and body systems (pelvic inflammatory disease, disseminated gonococcal infection). Therefore, it may result in severe complications and sequelaes, infertility being one of the most common, which impart public health importance to this STD.
