Old Testament Theology of the Covenant. A Systemisation of Biblical Tradition

Sažetak
The study treats the biblical idea of the »covenant« in the history of Israel. After the deliverance from Egypt Yahweh initiated the founding covenant with his chosen people.
At Mount Sinai the people were represented by the »Moses’ group«. In the time of the Kings the promise bound to the covenant of David became important too. In the 7th century BC the Deuteronomic school went on to elaborate the theology of the covenant. So the covenant is built on the divine oath given to the Patriarchs. The Decalogue is the founding document of the Covenant at Mount Sinai. Before taking the promised land on the field of Moab the covenant was renewed after the proclamation of the Deuteronomic Torah (covenantal code). Deuteronomic covenantal theology regards the exile of Babylon as a result of the broken covenant. Prophets during the time of the exile begin to speak about a »New Covenant« contrary to the covenant from the time of the Exodus. After the exile, priestly documents pass on the covenant of Sinai with Israel and speak of the covenant of grace with Abraham. For the Jews in the time of Jesus, the covenant means the fulfilment of the Torah. In the New Testament the narration of the Last Supper, the Pauline Writings and the Letter to the Hebrews give us the message of the fulfilment of the promised New Covenant.
