Sažetak

In the historical and publicist writings not only of the 19th and 20th centuries, but also of today, when analysing the migrations oriented toward Istria, the usual assumption is that, in the period between the 16th and the 18th centuries, Montenegro had – from the culturological aspect – been mostly compact and divided only between two worlds: the Orthodox and the Islamic. However, is this really true? Several examples from the Istrian peninsular in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea (Croatian territory) show a different social structure in Montenegro, from which a number of families had emigrated to the then Venetian province in Istria. The entries of individual names and family names, together with remarks found in Catholic parish registers, prove that the Istrian peninsular had been inhabited by several dozens Catholic families from the socalled “Old Montenegro”. The register entries (name, family name and remark that a family comes “da Montenegro”) leave no doubt to the fact that those families had come from Montenegro, which had – at that time – belonged to the Ottoman Empire. The majority of such immigrants settled in Poreč, Vodnjan, Bale and Fažana. They joined the immigrants, who had come to Istria from the Venetian province of Dalmatia (Southern Croatia), and who are – in written sources – usually referred to as the Paštrovićs. It is not easy – based only upon the family name – to differentiate whether an individual was a Croat or a Montenegrin by ethnicity, since the name may also suggest a person had come from the Paštrović locality. Domenico Pastrovichio, a longtime Catholic parish priest and canon of the collegial church of St. Blaise in Vodnjan, was one of the betterknown persons bearing this family name. He held the post of the spiritual counsel in this area at the time the Orthodox Montenegrins immigrated and were described as habitantes nuovi (the new inhabitants). Nevertheless – according to the sources available – he showed no interest for the newly immigrated Orthodox Christians.
