Sažetak

The village of Preko belonged to the Parish of St. Euphemia in Sutomišćica until 1770 when it became a separate parish. In the 18th century in the Parish of St. Euphemia there were the following brotherhoods: the Brotherhood of St. Euphemia in Sutomišćica called Vela Skula, the Brotherhood of the Body of Jesus (Corpus Domini), which had probably existed before the 18th century, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mount Carmen and the Souls of Purgatory from 1743 to 1821, the Brotherhood of the Holy Sacrament and the Brotherhood of St Joseph. In all these brotherhoods, the memberswere also the local people of Preko. In the area of Preko even earlier there existed the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary, whose members were mainly the locals from Preko and which was mentioned on a sheet of paper written in cursive Glagolitic. From that brotherhood, a quatren (without kapituli) from 1778 to 1845 has been preserved. After the separation of the Parish of Preko from the Parish of Sutomišćica, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Carmen and the Souls of Purgatory was established. The aims and tasks of these brotherhoods, like most other brotherhoods in the area, related to the tidying up of the Church and the village, fostering unity among the members, obeying the rules, assisting when a family member or any of the bratimi died, borrowing money, eating together, participating in communal public works to the benefit of the brotherhood and the village, not insulting each other and respecting the other brothers. Penalties were paid by those who did not attend masses and funerals of their deceased brothers and sisters, who did not give them the mass, who did not participate in meetings of the brotherhood, the delivery of bills and the annual meetings of the brotherhood, those who did not participate in communal works and those who insulted the other brothers and did not wish to accept the responsibility in the administration for which they were elected. From all this we can see that these brotherhoods played a major role in the cultural, religious, social and economic development of the village as well as the improvement of the living standards of people. For this reason there is evidence that a large number of the local people joined and wanted to join the brotherhoods, and many of them were members of several brotherhoods at the same time.
