Sažetak

Low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) have been widely used in clinical practice and consequently, they have almost fully replaced standard unfractioned heparin (UFH). They are used in therapy of thromboembolic incidents and acute coronary syndromes, prevention of thromboembolic incidents in general surgery, traumatologic surgery, orthopedic surgery, and gynecological diseases. There are several LMWH preparations available to the practitioner and they differ in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. This report reviews the biochemistry and pharmacology of different LMWHs and differences between LMWHs and UHF. It also tries to identify which are more suitable for clinical practice.
