Sažetak

Vinyl chloride (VC) is an important industrial reagent used in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The strong demand for PVC resulted in constant growth of worldwide VC production. Accordingly, an important element is also the care for environmental protection. The aim of this work was to study the treatment of wastewater originating from the process of oxychlorination of ethylene (OXY effl uent) in the production of vinyl chloride in the petrochemical industry, DINA Omišalj. The efficiency and optimal process parameters for coagulation, flocculation and advanced Fenton oxidation for the treatment of OXY effl uent were established. The characterization of wastewater before and after treatment by advanced oxidation was carried out. Low effi ciencies of coagulation and flocculation were observed; only 24% of initial total organic carbon concentration (TOC) was removed by coagulation using polyaluminium chloride, while only 2-13% of TOC was removed by flocculation with polyacrilates. Nevertheless, characterization of wastewater following the treatment by the Fenton process showed satisfactory results. In addition, 97% of TOC was removed and a notable decrease in concentration of all present compounds except for NaCl was achieved by the Fenton process.
