Abstract

The life of Jozefina Ožegović from 1848 till 1855 was characterized by political turmoils which were started, among others, by her son Metel. Her writing is a reflection of that time and her concern for Metel is the centre of her interest. Social and economic changes that consequently emerged only influenced Jozefina when workers had to be found. On the one side, she still kept her social status and did not change her way of life, but on the other side she showed respect for those who were not of noble origin. Due to political changes, however, she found it more and more difficult to manage the estate, she incurred debts and ended up by selling her property. Strongly affected by the failure, she fell ill, but having a loving family to support her she succeeded in preserving her identity and pride.
