Sanja Čurković Kalebić
Abstract
The use of language is dependent upon a speech event. The position of the participants of a speech event detennines the functions of their utterances. Teaching a foreign language is a speech event whose participants do not share the same position with reference to the language knowledge which is the aim and means of their verbal interaction. This paper investigates how this unequal position is
reflected upon the level of the language functions performed in the E.FL. classroom. Having investígated the Corpus of transcribed tape-reoorded samples of the E.FL. classroom talk in our schools, the author defines the functions of the classroom language have been defined. A quantitative analysis is made in order to discover the presence of each function within the teacher and pupil talk. The distribution of a particular function in teacher and pupil talk is analysed with reference to the communicative task being performed.
The obtained results are discussed and their implications for further research are stressed.
