Physiognomy in Stendhaľs Novels: "La Science de Lavater" or “Croyez après cela aux physionomies"?
Graeme Tytler
Abstract
The article that follows is a study of Stendhaľs manifold reaction to the theory of physiognomy propounded byJean-Gaspard Lavater which was widely spread during the period of realism and found
many echoes in the 19th century novel. The author compares Stendhaľs ideas with Lavatefs and analyzes the way in which he presents the external features, particularly faces, and their sometimes paradoxical correlation with the psyche and character of the tictional personages. He pays particular attention to the manner in which characters experience their perception of other characters and points to the importance of such subjectíve interrelationships for Stendhaľs narrative technique.
