Abstract

This reading of Wílkie Collins's most famous novel, The Moonstone, tries to suggest some interpretations of the noveľs most prominent metaphor, a Diamond called the Moonstone, and to investigate the models this novel's generates for its understanding. Central importance is attached to the noveľs discovery of the unconscious, which becomes the focal point for its critique of some cultural and literary cliches.
