D u b l i n e r s: Early Subversions
Sonja Bašić
Abstract
The author of this paper reconsiders the realist and symbolist strategies in Dubliners, proposing that Joyce subverted them both, to the point of making them problematic. Joyce's subversiveness in this book is particularly difficult to catch because it does not "show". In this respect, Dubliners could paradoxically be considered Joyce's most difficult text to approach critically. Joyce's narrative strategies undercut both our overconfident certainties about the possible recuperation of meaning and our often pretentious moral judgements and literal interpretations. Joyce seemed to be in agreement with Flaubert who said: “Oui, la bétise consiste a vouloir conclure".
