Abstract

trans-K[Cr(NCS)4py2] ⋅ 4py (1) (py = pyridine) was prepared by refluxing K3[Cr(NCS)6] in pyridine,
where the substitution of two isothiocyanate ligands with two pyridine molecules was taking
place. By a similar synthesis procedure in g-picoline (g-pic), neutral mer-[Cr(NCS)3(g-pic)3] ⋅
4/3(g-pic) (2) was obtained. The crystal structure of compound 1 consists of polymeric chains
in which trans-octahedrally coordinated CrIII in [Cr(NCS)4py2]– anions and trans-octahedrally
coordinated K+ are connected via nonlinear KSCN–Cr–NCSK contacts. In the structure of
compound 2, isolated mer-[Cr(NCS)3(g-pic)3] molecules together with free g-pic lattice molecules
were identified. The results of IR spectroscopy are in agreement with Cr–NCS bonding
of the NCS ligand for both compounds.
