Abstract

Infrared spectra of the three title compounds having the general formula Cu(bpy)XY4'2H20 (where XY4 is SO4, Se04 or BeF4) and of their partially deuterated analogues were recorded at room temperature, at the boiling temperature of liquid nitrogen and at intermediate temperature.
Particular attention was paid to the possible structural similarity between the studied compounds, the spectral reflections of the anion geometry and the location of water librational bands. The bipyridine bands are only briefly discussed.
Although some spectral differences (especially in the regions of anion stretchings) do exist, it seems that the selenate compound must have a very similar structure to those of the other two compounds, which are known to be isomorphous. It seems, however, that the selenate ions are less distorted than either the sulfate or tetrafluoroberyllate ones.
Three bands assignable to water librations are found, their number and, especially, their intensity indicating a considerable mixing of the librational modes. This conclusion is consistent with the rather unusual geometry of the neighbourhood of water molecules in the structure.
