Abstract
One hundred thirty-eight children adjacent to a primary lead smelter with prolonged asymptomatic increased lead absorption were evaluated for evidence of lead toxicity. They were compared to a pair matched control group Iiving 3.2 and 4.4 km from the smelter. Mean blood lead was 50.34 µg/100 ml for test group and 20.24 µg/100 ml for controls. The children were evaluated by history, physical and neurological examination, laboratory tests, nerve conduction tests, psychometric evaluation, and teacher rating. Data was analyzed.by geographic area, blood lead levels, and multiple risk factors. Statistical evaluation included independent t test, correlated t test, and analysis of variance. Expected significant differences in laboratory tests were identified. No significant differences related to increased lead absorption were identified by physical, neurological, psychometric, and school performance measurements in any of the groups.
