Abstract

Numismatic catalogues and literature note examples of forged Austrian Gulden banknotes made at the end of the 18th and especially during the 19th century. Such specimens of banknotes can be found in museums and in private collections. The forgeries were made both by drawing, in smaller numbers, and by printing, in larger numbers, although there were strict laws against forging money. Forged 5, 10 and 100 Guldens (issued on 1 January 1847) made by printing and drawing are especially interesting because of the time when they were made and their circulation, and also because of the high quality production. These forgeries had obviously been made in large quantities and the article shows their characteristics.
