Abstract

The author begins by examining the circumstances under which the mint was activated and then analyses the iconography, metrology and inscriptions on Bosnian coins minted between 1428 and 1443. King Tvrtko II Tvrtković of Bosnia rejected the iconographic standards of the previous period. The author analyses the changed obverse of the coins introduced by Tvrtko II, which show the entire coat-of-arms with the crown and monogram on the shield, as the central part of the image. In this way Tvrtko activated the concept of the Holy Crown which he had, as sacra nostra corona, previously used in sphragistic and diplomatic material. Attention focuses on Tvrtko's sweeping monetary reform, in which he deserted the sterling and Cologne currency standard of his predecessors and adopted a standard based on the Ottoman akçe derived from the Persian and Roman (Byzantine) standard. The article gives a new classification of Tvrtko's coins and with its help defines the periodisation and minting order of all the three nominal values.
