Abstract

Želimir Janeš (Sisak, 12 December 1916 – Zagreb, 22 January 1996), in his extensive body of medal design, fundamentally changed the approach to the contemporary Croatian medal by introducing tactile and table forms. By tackling issues, extending the nature of the medal and sculptural experimentation, he created completely new plastic forms. Not only did his medals not negate the approach to the medal as a tribute expressing gratitude, they also strengthened the perception of a personal experiencing of the commendation. The holdings of the Modern Gallery have nine medals of tribute created by Želimir Janeš in the late sixties and early seventies of the twentieth century, all of them masterworks by one of the greatest Croatian medallists.
