Abstract

The high resolution NMR spectrum of specifically deuterated
allyl alcohol h as been ,a na lysed as an ABC type. The following
spin-spin coupling constants of vinyl hydrogens are obtain ed :
Jtrnn s = 17.33 c/s J cis = 10.53 el s and J gc m = 1.85 c/s,.
The relative signs have been established by calcul ating the line
intensities for various possibilities. A close agreement with experiment
is obtained only when they are all positive. An explanation
of th e large effect of the sign of J AB (Jge m) on calculated intensities
is given. The spectrum of u ndeuterated a llyl a lcohol h as been
interpreted on the basis of ABCX2 a nd the following approximate
coupling constants of m ethylene to vinyl h ydrogens are obtained:
J xA = J xB = 1.5 c/s and J xc = 5 c/s.
