Abstract

This article looks at the discourse about Montenegrin "personality and culture" (Dinko Tomašić) in the period between the early nineteenth century and the loss of an independent state in 1918. After years of war which has divided Montenegrins from some of their neighbours, the authors suggest that the new Montenegro might benefit from "rediscovering" a more pluralist identity, especially given the number of minorities in the republic, including Muslims.
