Abstract

There was mass immigration of Europeans to the United States in the early 20th
century. Immigrants from the Dalmatian village of Desna near Metkovic mostly moved
to Aberdeen in the north-west of the country. In the new homeland, many started their
own crafts and trades and actively contributed to the economic progress of the United
States. One of the most successful Croatian immigrants was Joe G. Batinovich who
had his own shop. In a shortage of coins he had his tokens minted which were used as
a means of payment in his shop. The token was worth 5 cents.
