Rethinking the European Union Withdrawal Clause

Abstract
The Lisbon Treaty introduced an EU withdrawal procedure in Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU). However, the withdrawal procedure outlined in Article 50 TEU revealed a lack of clarity in withdrawal rules, highlighting the need for future amendments. This is particularly evident in aspects such as the setting of the two-year withdrawal period, the regulation of possible extensions of the withdrawal period, the role of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in the withdrawal procedure, and the required majority for the conclusion of a withdrawal agreement.
