Abstract
The degree of linear polarization of elastically scattered gamma rays in uranium was measured by means of a planar Ge(Li) detector. The measurements were performed with gamma rays of 279 keV at scattering angles of 45°, 60°, 75°, 90°, 105 °, and 135° and with gamma rays of 662 keV at angles of 51°, 60°, 75°, 90°, 105°, 120°, and 135°. The results are compared with the values calculated from the theory of Brown et al., taking into account Rayleigh scattering by K- and L-shell electrons, and nuclear Thomson scattering. The data are in fair agreement with the theory.
