Abstract

An estimation of the long range contributions is made to vibrational energy transfer in ion-diatomic molecule collisions in the energy region of a few hundred eV. The calculations are based on the linearly forced harmonic oscillator theory and assume that vibrational excitation takes place through the linear dependence of the polarizability of the diatom on the vibrational coordinate. When the diatomic molecule possesses a permanent dipole moment a similar linear dependence is assumed for the dipole moment. The results of the method are compared to the experimental findings for Li+ + N2 and Li+ + CO collisions at the energy region of a few hundred eV.
