Oxygen controlling cobalt allotropy

Abstract

The energetics of martensitic α → ε transformation of cobalt and its reverse round an equilibrium temperature of 690 K has not yet been fully clarified. The present letter raises arguments which indicate that elastic lattice stresses, introduced by octahedral oxygen, could serve as actual regulator of cobalt allotropy.
