Abstract
A novel suspension system using both magnetic and mechanical springs is described. The suspension is capable of isolating the test mass of, say, a seismometer, with an upper (magnetic) spring natural frequency of 10 to 30 Hz, and a lower (mechanical) spring frequency of 1 Hz, or less. The upper spring can be critically damped by adjusting derivative gain of the feedback system used to stabilize the magnetic suspension.
