Abstract

The main features of the IRIS (International Reactor Innovative and Secure) reactor are presented in this article. IRIS is an integral, modular, light-water reactor of medium power (335 MWe). The IRIS reactor project is being developed by an international consortium of about twenty organizations from ten countries, led by Westinghouse. The primary goal of the project is to develop a safe, reliable, and economical small-to-medium power reactor. The article describes the integral reactor vessel, which, in addition to the reactor core, moderator, control rods, and neutron reflector, contains steam generators, reactor pumps, control rod mechanisms, and a pressurizer. Unique safety features (“safety-by-design”) enable smaller and simpler passive safety systems. Enhanced safety and reliability, economic efficiency, and the possibility of gradual expansion of new capacity with relatively low investments make IRIS particularly attractive for smaller power systems.
