Digitalisation: So what? - Why AI will increase the need for experts

Abstract

Digitalisation is transforming transformer monitoring, enabling earlier detection of potential issues and generating more data than ever before. However, improved visibility does not automatically lead to better decisions. This article examines the gap between data and action, the limitations of digital models and twins, and the evolving role of AI as a support tool rather than a replacement for expert judgment.
As systems detect more complex and earlier-stage conditions, decisionmaking shifts toward deeper interpretation under uncertainty. The article argues that digitalisation increases the need for expertise and highlights the importance of trust and operational frameworks in making data actionable.
