Abstract

The empirical reliability functions Re(t), failure rate λe(t) and the density of failures fe(t) of the main marine diesel engine were determined using the empirical data on failures. It was found that the Weibull [1] distribution with parameters β=2.613 and η=400 approximated well the reliability of a light high speed marine diesel engine. Serial reliability confi guration of the marine diesel engine subsystem was analysed and the failure frequency as well as the values of the failure rate by subsystems were determined. The further study will also determine the intervals for preventive replacement of the subsystem parts based on the empirical data which will be compared to the recommendations given by the manufacturer of marine diesel engines.
