Abstract

The paper aims at presenting the maintenance of the ship machinery, which includes the system of the ship maintenance, the approaches to the ship maintenance and the maintenance during the ship life cycle. The four main factors that influence the functionality of the ship maintenance are included in the ship maintenance system. These are the operater, the environment (the ports of call, the emergency ports, the climate, the conditions at sea), the legislation (regulations that a ship must fulfill) and the maintenance itself. A survey of the maintenance procedure used in the last 30 years is presented. The corrective maintenance is the oldest model of the equipment maintenance. It is performed after a failure. The preventive maintenance can be a periodical and an on-condition preventive maintenance. The maintenance interval by the periodical preventive maintenance can be a calendar based or the operating life based one. The periodic maintenance policy based on the operating life (maintenance performed following the manufacturer’s instructions) is generally used onboard ships. The on-condition preventive maintenance can be periodical or continued. The maintenance cost structure is presented, as well as all the maintenance phases in the ship life cycle.
