Abstract
Based on a number of investigations, the method of using meristic and morphometric characteristics for differentiating fish populations was examined. The most significant and frequently investigated characteristics (10 meristic and 30 morphometric), are described and the relation of genetic and ecological varinaces in their expression are explained. Besides the conventional methods of relations in analyzing morphometrical characteristics, also presented are the basic modern methods related to the network (truss network).
The basic elements of the analysis of these characteristics are stated. In the discussion it is emphasized that the use of meristic and morphometric characteristics can assist in differentiating the fish populations in their natural biotops, but that genetic conditioning of these differences still has to be confirmed by a special method.
