Abstract

The use of reinforced-concrete fill as a means of strengthening frames characterized by insufficient bearing capacity and ductility is presented, and proposal is given to design them either as load bearing and ductile reinforced-concrete walls, or in such a way that they are compliant with European standards EN 1992-1-1 and EN 1998-1 for monolithic walls. The proposal is based on similarity of hysteresis loops and fracturing image of strengthened frames and monolithic walls. This procedure ensures ductile behaviour of wall flange and web, while Eurocodes cover flange ductility only.
