Abstract

The Geodynamic GPS-Network of the City of Zagreb represents the longest and the most intensive research effort in the field of geodynamics in Croatia. Since the establishment of the Network in 1997, nine series of precise GPS measurements have been conducted on specially stabilized points of Geodynamical Network of City of Zagreb with purpose of investigation of tectonic movements and related seismic activity related to the research. Processing of observation data was done with scientific software GAMIT/GLOBK, developed by MIT. Using results from all series of GPS measurements conducted since 1997 till 2009 geodetic model of tectonic movements has been created. In the area of interest, independent geological investigations have been conducted through even longer period which resulted in geological model of tectonic movements. The correlation coefficient between geodetic and geologic model has been calculated. It shows a high degree of correlation thus giving credibility to both methods of research. Systematic analysis has been conducted over geodetic and geologic results giving a unique interdisciplinary model of crust movements over wider Zagreb area as a result. This interdisciplinary interpretation of obtained geodetic movements leads to a new scientific insight about geodynamics of the City of Zagreb area. The results of this scientific research will be used to delineate zones of potential earthquake hazard or tectonically caused landslides. The paper pays particular attention to the GPS series of measurements conducted in 2009, because its results show the increased tectonic activity in the period 2008-2009. The analysis of results showed that the increase in tectonic activity and in particular, direction of movements of certain points indicate the direct influence of regional tectonic movements. Determined velocities of the points in the research area point to the initial phase of increased tectonic activity in the area parallel to the Zagreb fault and to the possibility that increased tectonic activity of this area is yet to come.
