Abstract
Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture. The underlying mechanism in all cases of osteoporosis is an imbalance between bone resorption and bone formation. Osteoporosis is defined as a bone mineral density 2.5 standard deviations below peak bone mass (30-year old healthy female average) as measured by dual-emission X-ray absorptiometry. While preventive strategies, such as calcium, vitamin D, exercise and reduced risk factors should always be implemented, many patients will become candidates for pharmacologic intervention to achieve adequate fracture protection. There are several medications used to treat osteoporosis.
According to primary effect on bone metabolism medications can be classified as antiresorptive or bone anabolic agents. Antiresorptive agents primarily reduce bone resorption, while anabolic agents induce bone formation. This article summarises the medications
currently used in osteoporosis treatment, as well as future treatment options.
