Abstract

This paper deals with visual aspects of Ivo Raić’s stage productions for dramas and operas he produced for the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, from the beginning of his work as a director in 1909, until his death in 1931. This research reveals that almost all of his roughly 150 productions performed in the above mentioned period are characterized by specific visual components regardless of whether they refer to the set design, costumes, lightning design, distribution of the cast, i.e. choirs/soloists on the set, or to the total visual impression of the set or play/opera as a whole.
The conclusion of this study is that the visual represents a constitutional part of Raić’s directorial work and that Raić’s modern approach to the visual represents an important contribution to modernization of the Croatian stage production.
