Abstract

This paper throws light on the trans-textual orientation of the first Croatian re-interpretation of the mythic tale of Antigone. The writer of this text, Drago Ivanišević, made his name in Croatian literature as a surrealist poet. Into his drama Love in Mourning or Anti-Antigone of 1955, the author instilled a rich semantic potential. Into the structurally conventional drama, Ivanišević put a series of modern procedures, working out the topic of the relativity of truth with an open ending in which there was no ideological message, rather the theme of the absurdity of life through the double nature of the dramatis personae of Antigone/Anti-Antigone.
