Abstract

This paper is a somewhat abbreviated version of my degree paper written under the mentorship of Prof. Tomo Vinšćak at the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the Faculty of the Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. That paper was the outcome of interest developed during my travel in India and focused on the issue of the cremation of widows on the Subcontinent throughout history, and even today. The paper deals with explanation of the inception and features of the phenomenon itself, a historical review, similarities with other culturological phenomena, and theoretical questions and diverse ways of viewing the thematics and issues through times past and in the present day.
