Abstract

The Adriatic Sea Area has several advantages for shippers and ship owners considering cargo transport and attractiveness of the coast. It offers great potential for the cruising companies and nautical tourism causing the rapid grow in shipping during the last decade. This causes the rising health and environmental concerns, imposing the search for the solutions to counterbalance the pollution effects and sustainability in development.
This paper is an overview of the authors’ preliminary results obtained during several ongoing researches which have resulted in the proposal of ASAP (Adriatic Sea Area Protection) project. The goal is to establish the ship emission inventory for the Adriatic Sea which findings will be the base for the Emission register that will be incorporated in an effective Emission Monitoring Information System (EMIS). Based on the results, the interested parties have the possibility to request the IMO protection of the Area.
The authors’ researches are focused on the prevention of air pollution coming from the ship emissions, concluding with the effective solutions that should be accomplished through the Integrated Coastal Zone Management between the interested parties.
