Abstract

The paper explores the importance of the intercultural competence of tour gtiides in Great Britain, as perceived by tourists from Mainland China; it also assesses the quality of the tour guides' performance when performing their duties. Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou are the primary geographic sources of Chinese outbound tourists; a questionnaire survey at the international airports in these three cities produced 462 usable questionnaires. The conclusion provides insights into the training that is needed by tour guides, and also into potential improvements to the experiences of the growing numbers of tourists from Mainland China when participating in guided tours.
