Abstract

In patients with myelodysplastic syndrome, iron overload is a serious complication caused mostly by repeated red blood cell transfusions. Iron overload contributes to organ dysfunction and probably has a negative impact on patient’s survival. Several publications suggest that iron chelation therapy can decrease morbidity and mortality of these patients. In this paper we review the guidelines of the Croatian Cooperative Group for Hematological Diseases (Krohem) for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of the iron overload in myelodysplastic syndrome.
