Abstract

An epidemy of trichinellosis occurred in Istria in October 2002 lasting throughout November. 151 infected patients were reported to the Public Health Institute of the Istrian County, 48 of them were hospitalized in the Pula General Hospital, 18 were treated ambulatory, and the other patients were treated in other hospitals: Rijeka, Zagreb and Trieste, since they happened to be there as the first symptoms occurred. The work gives a clinical overview of our patients, including a multidisciplinary approach and monitoring. All the patients were successfully treated, but many of them, who developed neurological complications, still feel the consequences of the disease.
Trichinellosis has always accompanied mankind; it has been rather common in our country since 1968 and appears regularly every year. There were approximately ten patients annually in the 1970s, but more than one hundred in the year 2000 and in the following years. Trichinellosis in the Istrian county is always imported, it occurs more rarely (four epidemics in the last decade), but we should always keep it in mind.
