Abstract

The paper gives an overview of the treatment of appendicitis through history. It took a long time to understand that the pathological processes begin in the vermiform appendix, mostly caused by an obstruction of the appendix itself, followed by an infection, a state that very often leads to death without surgical intervention. The first description of the vermiform appendix was made in 1521, but it was only in 1736 that the first appendectomy was performed by Claudius Amyand in London. The introduction of general anesthesia and antiseptic surgery in the 19th century changed the course of the development of surgery. Many surgeons in Europe and in the United States contributed to the success of this treatment, which is today performed both in the classical way and by using laparoscopy.
