Abstract

The results of investigation of the red soil and subsurface of unknown composition and spreading on the geomagnetic elements determination are presented. Geomagnetic field surveys took place on four locations of the Croatian Geomagnetic Network for Field Mapping covered with red soil on the territory of southern and western Istria. In addition to the points with low gradients, the D, I, F observations were performed on the nearby points with high total intensity gradients. The maximum differences in D (8'56''), I (7'02'') and F (67.2 nT) were found on the investigated locations at the distance of approx 40 m to 330 m. The acceptability of the 3 nT/m maximum gradient criterion for the establishment and survey of geomagnetic stations was proved by D and I observations at different DIM heights. Magnetic properties of the red soil samples from all investigated locations were determined during total intensity observations at POKU repeat station in quiet magnetic conditions. The chemical analysis of the red soil samples from KRNI location with maximum difference in magnetic properties was performed.
