Abstract

Research was conducted among 425 professionals (in social welfare, health care, police, justice, NGO's and media) in Istrian County to examine their professional experience with violence against women, assess magnitude of the problem in local community and their self-assessed knowledge with proposals on additional educational contents and needs.
According to their statements, policemen and NGO’s members the most frequently encountered victims of domestic violence in their workplaces; social workers, physicians and judges encountered them sometimes, and nurses and dentists rarely. Most of professionals specified until 10 suspected and until 5 verified cases of violence against women in their practice. They estimated 25 non-reported hidden cases on 1 reported case.
Professionals self assessed their knowledge as medium (NGO‘s members as good). Health care professionals stated very poor knowledge about violence against women. There was no poor knowledge in respondents from justice and NGO. NGO members, social workers and policemen were the most interested in additional education, while professionals in health care and justice were interested at least. They proposed prevention, management and early detection as contents for additional education. Only few respondents were interested in education on abuser’s management.
Results of research indicated necessity for continuous assistance and work with professionals in local community. According to respondents’ proposals, interdisciplinary education and inter-sectorial collaboration had the priority in this work.
