Abstract
The use of radiological weapons presents a new challenge not faced before, but with the current situation in the international arena this could easily change. The possible use of these weapons requires a degree of special preparedness from the police, as they will be among the first respon-ders. Such incidents will be different from conventional explosions, so the conventional tactics need to be adapted. The first part of the article is an introduction to the technical aspects of radiological weapons and their consequences. The second part discusses the police tactics at the scene of a radiological bomb explosion. Considering that in cases like this we can expect police officers at the scene to be uncertain in how to proceed and not to be contaminated, special attention is given to self-pro-tection measures.
